The night passed and morning came. Kiyoko opened her eyes slowly as she felt the warmth. First thing she saw was a white ceiling. She sat up and looked around finding herself in a room. As she sat up she remembered the deal she had made with Satoru.
She look at the clock that was hanging on the wall, it was 5:45 A.M.
Last night before Satoru had left, he told her that she had to come down to the café at 7:00 A.M. He would teach her all that she needed to know and introduce her to the other workers.
‘There is still a bit time left.” she thought.
Kiyoko took a shower and got changed. She stepped out of her room and headed downstairs. She walked around the café, trying to get used to it. She was so focused that she didn’t realize that time had passed until she heard someone whisper.
“Shhh……..something or someone’s in here.”
“Maybe it’s a mouse! Or a thief! Oi! You sure you locked the door yesterday?”
A loud ‘bang’ came right after that sentence.
“Oi! Be more careful! If it’s a thief, he might hear us.”
“Stop whacking my head! It hurts.”
Kiyoko poked her head out of the wall she stood behind and saw two guys; one behind the other with their backs facing her way. She walked out from the kitchen.
“Erm……Excuse me.” She said.
The guys quickly turned around.
“Who are you? Are you here to steal things? I’ll call the police!” The one at the front said.
“No, I’m not here to steal things. I will be working here starting today.”
“What are you talking about? How did you come in?” The other asked.
“I let her in and she’s going to start living upstairs in the attic. She’s going to start working with you guys too.” A fourth voice joined in the conversation.
They all turned and saw Satoru walking into the café.
“Nii, you’re here early today,” one of the guy said.
“Nii, you said that she’s going to start working with us? Who’s she?” The other asked.
Satoru placed his hands on Kiyoko’s shoulder and said, “Her name’s Kiyoko, she’s my friend. Treat her well or else….” He showed his fist jokingly. “Kiyoko, this is Akira on the left and Kichiro on the right. We have another worker, but she’s not here today.”
“Nice to meet you Kiyoko!” Akira and Kichiro said at the same time.
“Nice to meet you too.” Kiyoko replied.
“Okay okay! You guys can learn more about each other later on, but we have to start working and open the café soon.”
“Kiyoko, where’s your jacket? We’re gonna go and get some ingredients in a while. I’m also gonna teach you a few things around the shop, okay?” Satoru said as he grabbed his jacket. He looked up and smiled at Kiyoko who got ready to go shopping with him.
Kiyoko showed up with a jacket but no scarf. Satoru looked at her and took off his scarf, wrapping it around her. “It’s getting cold, take my scarf. I don’t want you to get sick.” Satoru said before heading out the café with her.
When Kiyoko took her first step out of the café, three little kids ran past her, causing her to lose her balance. Kiyoko felt as if she was going to fall but she didn’t feel the hard ground. She opened her eyes and noticed that Satoru had her in his arms. “Are you okay?” he asked.
“Yeah, thank you.” She said standing up as fast as she could, both of them looking away awkwardly. Kiyoko watched the three little kids running in front of her. Two boys and one girl.
‘Just like me and the guys,’ She thought. ‘Always running around and acting like fools.. Maybe…if I hadn’t insisted that night, it wouldn’t have been like this now.. We would have still been together and all carefree like them.’
Around a year ago
“Kiyoko, let’s just look for her tomorrow. It’s late and she might be asleep.” The tallest boy out of the three said.
“I want to ask her now, maybe she’s still awake! I can’t wait till morning. I really want to go out tomorrow.”
“Kiyoko listen to nii.” The other boy of the two said.
“She said that I could request something for my birthday.”
“Kiyoko!” The two boys yelled at the same time.
Kiyoko didn’t listen to her friends and headed to their caretaker’s room. The two boys that she had been talking with went after her.
“See her light’s still on. She’s awake.”
They walked closer and when Kiyoko was about to call out their caretaker’s name, she heard a male voice talking. They were supposed to leave, but curiosity got the better of them. There were not many visitors who came here, especially this late. It was always just their caretaker or gardeners that would be here .
They were all focus on the conversations and they didn’t know what will fall upon them soon because of their curiosity.
